Measurement of power supply and transformer

Selecting an LED loop or power supply/transformer and calculating the appropriate power is a simple procedure.

First check if the LED strip or fixtures operate on 12V or 24V, and select a 12 or 24V transformer/power supply accordingly.

The total power (W) required for the loop or fixtures is then calculated and a "safety margin" of at least 10% is added (so that the power supply does not run continuously at 100% power). The equation gives a reading (eg 30W). The power of the transformer must be greater than the power obtained from the calculation ( W ). There is no harm in an oversized transformer, but in this case more lamps can be added to the same transformer later if desired.

In LED strips, the power is usually expressed in watts per meter, e.g. 4.8 W/m or 14.4 W/m. In these, one meter of LED loop has a power of 4.8W or 14.4W. If it is intended to install a 4 meter 4.8 W/m LED loop, the power required by the strip is 4 x 4.8 = 19.2 W. If several strips are installed behind the same transformer, the length of the strips is added together.

In luminaires, power consumption is usually expressed in power (watts, W). If several luminaires are connected to the power supply or transformer, the power required by them is added together. For example, 3 7W luminaires have an output of 21W.

Example: You want to install 2 three-meter 4.8 W/m LED loops in the kitchen, and you also want three 7W spotlights in the ceiling. All luminaires run on 12V and must be connected behind the same transformer. Calculate the appropriate transformer power:

  • The power of the LED loops is: 2 (st) x 3 mx 4.8 W / m = 2 x 3 x 4.8 = 28.8 W
  • The power of the headlights is 3 x 7 W = 21 W.
  • The combined power of the loops and spots is 28.8 W + 21 W = 49.8 W
  • Add 10% "safety margin" = 49.8 W x 1.1 = 54.78 W
  • The selected transformer must have an output of at least 54.8 W, i.e. a 60W transformer is sufficient.

Calculation formulas

  • Power ( W ) = operating voltage (V) x current (A)
    • for example. 12V x 2A = 24W
  • Current (A): Power (W)/ Operating voltage (V)
    • for example 200W / 12V = 16.6A
  • Operating voltage (V): Power (W) / current (A)
    • for example 144W / 6A = 24V
